Custom domain tools

Connect and manage domains through hosting tools.

On this page

Connect a domain, check its DNS and choose the primary domain. Set DNS records yourself at your provider.

Note

The connection covers the Space. You are a member, and the Space is not locked. A Space is a shared workspace in the app.

All four tools require Owner, Administrator or User. Read-only is not sufficient.

hosting_add_domain Add domain

changes data

Adds a custom domain to a project. The domain is then pending: it only serves the website once DNS is set, hosting_check_domain has found it correct and the certificate is ready.

The response gives the required DNS records. If they are missing because transfer is pending, call hosting_check_domain.

  • The hostname is at most 253 characters, is not an IP address and has no https:// or path. TEISENDA rejects hostnames in the zones teisenda.com, teisendapages.com and teisendahosting.com.
  • A project has at most 19 custom domains.
  • The plan limits custom domains per Space: a Space can have as many as its plan allows projects, so 1 on Free and 10 on Max. A subscribed Max plan offers packages with 5 extra projects and therefore 5 extra custom domains each; see Buy and cancel additional packages. At the limit, TEISENDA rejects the call and changes nothing.
Which DNS records does the response give, and what are they for?

The list only includes an AAAA record where the hosting node gives one. The TXT record with the name _teisenda-hosting.<Domain> and value teisenda-hosting=<Nachweis> proves that you own the domain.

Parameters of hosting_add_domain
ParameterTypeRequirementDescription
spaceIntegerrequiredThe ten-digit Space ID.
projectIntegerrequiredThe project number shown by hosting_list_projects.
hostnameTextrequiredA hostname without https:// or a path, for example www.example.com.

hosting_check_domain Check domain

changes data

Checks DNS and activates the domain if the records match. The certificate is then issued in the background.

Call the tool again to check the current state. After certificate failure, it starts another attempt.

If DNS does not match, the response gives the problems and Set either the CNAME record or the A record, plus the TXT record as proof of ownership..

Parameters of hosting_check_domain
ParameterTypeRequirementDescription
spaceIntegerrequiredThe ten-digit Space ID.
projectIntegerrequiredThe project number shown by hosting_list_projects.
hostnameTextrequiredA hostname without https:// or a path, for example www.example.com.

hosting_set_primary_domain Set primary domain

changes datadeletes, overwrites or changes what visitors see

Sets the primary domain: the address all other project addresses redirect to. It is an active custom domain or, if hostname is omitted, the project's TEISENDA address.

The primary domain changes on the first call. A custom domain must be active; visitors see the change once it is transferred.

Parameters of hosting_set_primary_domain
ParameterTypeRequirementDescription
spaceIntegerrequiredThe ten-digit Space ID.
projectIntegerrequiredThe project number shown by hosting_list_projects.
hostnameTextoptionalThe custom domain to make primary: a hostname without https:// or a path, for example www.example.com. If omitted, the TEISENDA address becomes primary.

hosting_remove_domain Remove domain

changes datadeletes, overwrites or changes what visitors seetwo steps

Removes the domain and certificate. If it was primary, the TEISENDA address becomes primary again.

First call the tool without confirm. Only the second call with the returned confirmation sentence removes the domain; the application should ask for your agreement first.

Parameters of hosting_remove_domain
ParameterTypeRequirementDescription
spaceIntegerrequiredThe ten-digit Space ID.
projectIntegerrequiredThe project number shown by hosting_list_projects.
hostnameTextrequiredA hostname without https:// or a path, for example www.example.com.
confirmTextoptionalThe application should omit it on the first call; the response then gives a confirmation sentence. It should only send this exact sentence after you agree.

If something goes wrong

Where a solution names a tool, ask the application to call it. The plan message ends with “This Space's plan is shown in TEISENDA under Settings › Plans.”; the settings entry is called Billing.

That isn't a valid hostname. Enter it without https:// and without a path.

The hostname is invalid. It must be at most 253 characters, cannot be an IP address and must not include https:// or a path. Give the bare hostname, for example www.example.com.

This domain is blocked.

The hostname is in a zone no project may use: teisenda.com or teisendapages.com. Use a custom domain.

Addresses in this zone are assigned by TEISENDA itself.

The hostname is in the zone teisendahosting.com, where TEISENDA assigns its own TEISENDA addresses. Use a custom domain.

This domain already leads to a project.

The domain already points to a project: this one, another project in the Space or a project in another Space. The same message appears if the hosting node knows the domain for a project. A hostname can belong to only one project across all Spaces. First remove it from the other project with hosting_remove_domain or use another hostname.

“More than … custom domains are not possible.”

The project already has 19 custom domains. Remove a domain first.

“This Space's plan does not allow more custom domains: … of … have been added. Nothing was changed. …”

The Space's plan allows no further custom domain: a Space can have as many as its plan allows projects. TEISENDA changed nothing. Remove a domain. Max and its packages allow more projects and therefore more custom domains; see Free and Max plans and Buy and cancel additional packages.

“Domain … does not belong to this project.”

The domain does not belong to this project. Check the project's domains with hosting_project_status.

Only possible once the domain is active.

hosting_set_primary_domain was called for a domain that is not active yet. Complete DNS setup and call hosting_check_domain until the domain is active.

“The DNS for … is not correct yet:”

This is not a rejection: hosting_check_domain found that the domain's DNS is not correct yet. The sentence is followed by one line per problem; the lines are listed in the next section. Set DNS records at your DNS provider and call hosting_check_domain again.

These problems are reported by hosting_check_domain

None of these lines is a rejection. The first nine appear in the result of hosting_check_domain while DNS is incorrect. The last three are the problem saved for the domain; hosting_project_status and hosting_check_domain show it as the domain's problem.

There is no DNS record for the domain.

The domain name does not point anywhere: at the end of its CNAME chain, the hosting node finds neither an A nor an AAAA record. Set the CNAME or A record given in the result.

The A record is missing.

The domain has an AAAA record but no A record. Set the A record to the value given in the result, or use the CNAME record instead.

There is another A record that points elsewhere.

Alongside the A record pointing to the hosting node, the domain has another A record pointing elsewhere. Remove the other A record at your DNS provider.

The domain points to a different server.

The domain has A records, but none is the hosting node's address: it points to another server. Replace the existing CNAME or A record with the one given in the result.

There is an AAAA record that points elsewhere.

The domain has an AAAA record that is not the hosting node's IPv6 address. The certificate authority prefers IPv6 and fails with such a record. Remove this AAAA record, or set it to the value given in the result if one is supplied.

A CAA record forbids issuing the certificate.

A CAA record for the domain or a parent name permits certificates only from certificate authorities other than Let's Encrypt, which the hosting node uses. Change or remove the CAA record at your DNS provider so it allows letsencrypt.org.

Proof of ownership is missing: the TXT record isn't set.

Proof of ownership is missing: the domain neither has a CNAME pointing to an address of the same project under teisendahosting.com nor has the TXT record _teisenda-hosting.<Domain> with the expected value. An A record alone proves nothing. Set the TXT record with the name and value given in the result.

The domain's DNS isn't responding.

The resolvers queried by the hosting node did not respond for the domain, so DNS could not be checked. Check with your DNS provider that the domain resolves and call hosting_check_domain again.

The records haven't arrived everywhere yet. Try again in a few minutes.

One of the two public resolvers queried by the hosting node already sees the records as correct, while the other does not. This line then appears alone. Wait a few minutes and call hosting_check_domain again.

The DNS isn't correct yet.

An attempt to activate the domain found DNS incorrect at that moment, so no certificate was requested. Correct DNS and call hosting_check_domain again.

The certificate was rejected.

Certificate issuance failed, for any reason. The domain then has the state failed. Check DNS records, especially any CAA record, and call hosting_check_domain again; this starts a new attempt once DNS is correct. If it keeps happening, contact support.

The hosting node reports a problem with this domain.

The hosting node reports something TEISENDA has no specific sentence for, such as a node restart interrupting certificate issuance. Call hosting_check_domain again.

Messages about the Space and project number are listed with the tools for Spaces and projects. All other messages that can occur with any tool are listed under Troubleshoot the Connector.
